Does anyone know what to do to lighten/color your hair if you have an allergy to hair color?

I had a severe allergic reaction to hair color 2 years ago after having dyed my hair in the salon and by myself for years. I thought it was just that particular brand of hair color but I've since tried 2 other brands and gone to a salon and still have a reaction. I was told to try Henna so I got a Henna tattoo and that reaction was awful. I really want to lighten/color my mousy brown hair but I'm weary of what to try. Anyone with a similar allergy or know of a product that is gentler but gets results?
